Surface Spotlight: Light & Stone

23/11/2016 15:39:03

Materials and surfaces play a wonderful role in our experience with our surroundings, where both classic and innovative aesthetics continue to inspire new directions.

Surface Design Show will once again be hosting Stone Gallery and Light School in its on-going mission to build relationships between all aspects of surface design. To celebrate the significance of these sectors this edition of Surface Spotlight focuses on advances in lighting and the importance of natural stone for today’s architects and designers. Sally Angharad reports.

Biological light: human-centric technology by Luctra enhances wellbeing and productivity

DURABLE Brand Luctra

Luctra, the human-centric lighting brand from DURABLE, has recently been awarded the German Design Award 2017 Gold for the design of its biological artificial light. As we spend the majority of time indoors the Luctra lamps offer users the opportunity to adapt working light precisely to their personal needs and daily routine. Products from the range have been installed in hotels and universities due to their adjustability and ease of use. The colour temperature can be changed from cold white to warm white to suit personal preferences and environmental conditions. Despite the technological complexity the lamps have a minimalist look and are operated by simply placing your finger on the glass touch panel.

Natural colour: blue tones of marble inspire new colour directions for hospitality interiors

The colour blue within interiors has been appearing more and more throughout 2016, from wallcoverings to upholstery and now even in the specification of marble. Fontanili Marble UK supplies Italian marble to clients worldwide and has noticed a particular rise in requests for blue toned materials, especially within the hospitality sector. This beautiful marble from Italy can be polished or honed to create a luxurious look with shades of blue contrasting the warmer layers within the natural stone. Palissandro Bluette has been used alongside Crevola Fiorito and Nuvolato in the Hilton Hotel, Shenzen and Hilton Hotel, France, creating eye-catching surfaces on floors and walls. The durability of the material means it can also be used for bathrooms walls, floors and spa interiors.

LED surfaces: Lighthole challenges traditional concepts with a new integral lighting system

Natura by Lighthole

Transforming how we think of luminaires Lighthole has launched Natura, its new range of laser cut surfaces that work as light diffusers. The Lighthole technology solves the problem of glare without losing light efficiency by using highly transparent plastic plates. The integral lighting system uses LEDs positioned on the on the edge of thin sheets of plastic material, emitting light through each layer’s patterned holes. The multiple through-holes scattered across the whole surface make the light extremely widespread while at the same time conserving energy and eliminating any dazzle. The new idea integral lighting system is applicable to any form, size and design and can be provided with dimmable light.

Connected spaces: Xicato launches XIM Gen4 smart lighting module with wireless communication

Xicato launches XIM Gen4 smart lighting module with wireless communication

Xicato / xicato.com

Xicato, an established manufacturer and thought leader in connected light sources has recently unveiled the new XIM Gen4, its fourth generation intelligent lighting module. This new module is causing quite a stir in the market with its Bluetooth Low Energy wireless communication, beacon capability and fully featured light control integrated into a single product. "By removing the wires from lighting control, it is now feasible to design, install and commission a fully featured system at much lower initial cost,” says Menko de Roos, CEO at Xicato. The modules can operate without a centralised controller, allowing more places to now consider upgrading to controlled lighting by simply replacing the light fixtures.
